what is going on? heat 1 in the prelim was stacked and now it has happened again! wtf usatf. why would the top 3 in prelim heat 1 all be in the same heat for the semifinal?!

This is exactly why eliminating time qualifiers in middle distance races is a bad idea. There's no way of guaranteeing that semi-final heats will be balanced, so there could be a bunch of nobodys in the final with no chance, but a top runner missing out.

At least with little qs a top contender who has a slightly off day and gets 5th in a stacked semi-final heat would have a chance to make the final if the time is fast enough.

What if in this example Allie Wilson runs 1:59 and gets 5th. Can you honestly say that she's less of a contender than someone who gets 4th in another heat who hasn't broken 2:01 all year? That's what getting rid of little qs would cause.

With Rose in the second semi, I think the bigger concern is someone in there runs 2-flat or 1:59high to get a distant 5th there while a blanket finish in the first heat wipes out a more qualified big name.

I don’t agree that semi 2 is a “heat of nobodies”. That’s how they all got in one heat. More sub 2 SBs, 6 prelim big Qs like the other semi and two prelim 1sts like the other semi.

Definitely not a stupid question - if someone is aware of the school records rule if the athlete is also sporting their NIL sponsor's gear during the event, I'd love to know the answer. I would imagine the same comparison to Willis/Whittaker would be for Allie Hays/Tuohy for NC State (not that Hays got close to a record but she ran in her NC State jersey, and I imagine KT will be sporting some Adidas gear this weekend)
