Advice needed! I am very much a casual runner, and at 49 not particularly fast at all. I ran one 200m last year - my first for 35 years - and did a poor 31.1 in flats. I was ok to 150m then had to put the breaks on due to my sore achilles.
I have trained over the winter & spring, but still had intermittent achilles issues, as well as a pulled hamstring which is now back to around 95%.
I have a race over 200m in 2 days to support my club in a Vets League. My aim was to run under 30 secs and not come last. However, although my training has been more than last year, max velocity has been virtually non-existent and its been temp at around 80% and 90%. I will also be running in flats again to protect the achilles as I have not had time to adapt to spikes.
My question is: at this performance level, how much time am I losing by wearing flats compared to spikes? Negligible (less than 0.5?) or more? It also looks like it might be slightly wet/raining on race day, so I am a little worried re gri.
I have a pair of mid distance adidas spikes I was tempted to break in over the next 2 days and risk running, but I fear it's too big a risk.
