I believe this is setting another bad precedent for USATF. Now all a returning World Champion has to do is to pick an event that they didn't even participate in during the qualifying window and compete. So if Athing Mu wanted to high jump she could take 3 attempts ,miss all three and go on her way. USATF opened this controversy last year by letting them not compete just so they had a written doctors excuse( i did that once in high school, didnt work...) . Athletes not competing on US soil sure isn't helping the sport. There is alot more to unfold about this topic but I will see if this thread has any legggggs to it.

YOU are setting a bad precedent yourself by posting a new thread without bothering to doublecheck your title.
In any case, it appears the USATF has changed the rules this year and current world champions no longer have to compete at USAs at all. Would you prefer Athing Mu run the 1500 at USAs? Or not run anything at all?

In order of preference I would like
1. Run the 800m to win
2. Run the 400m to win
3. Run the 1500m to win
99999999999th Jog one round of the 1500m with no intention of taking it further. Do I want to even watch that? Not really no. And do the others in her heat want that grandstanding as a distraction? Doubt it.

Wouldn’t #4 end her season? If you don’t want to see it, why make the suggestion?
This is an absolute garbage take. It’s not even remotely the same thing as Mu doing the high jump. She’s doing the next event up in distance from her primary event. It’s not uncommon at all for athletes to be competitive in an event one step above or below what they normally do. I think it’s great that she’s running the 1500m. It adds more intrigue to the event which is loaded already. She’s the Olympic and world champ at 800m she can whatever she wants.

I would love it if they run the usual slow sit and kick championship race that we see all the time and everyone forgets about Mu being in the race. Until with a lap to go the other runners realize oh s*** there’s a 49 second 400 runner right behind us!

The hard part is winning The World Championships, which is needed to do an event the Athlete is not known for, So if lets say Mu wanted to compete in the Shot Put but the only way she would be allowed is to Win World's that is fine with me.
That said the Last 2 Years Mu has been ranked #1 in the World in the 800, there have been many 800 Runners who were or are Very good in the 1500, Add that her Coach who sees her Train EVERYDAY says he wants her to get to 3:59 or better, and 3:59 is VERY Competitive for Americans as the Best Active runners PB is 3:58.03 Mu running the 1500 is very Interesting and coaches tend to have fairly accurate knowlege of what their Athletes are capable of.

I checked the U.S. championship 1500m races the last few years and I didn’t see any where Mu wouldn’t have been put under some stress prior to the final lap. Which year are you referring to?
The best get the benefit of a doubt. Just like Rupp never racing a marathon before the trials (one of the only few half qualifiers to not implode) and if you were decent high school the same reason your coaches probably didn’t make you do pointless time trials for tryouts
Sprcoach19.99 is right. This is not a bad take at all. If Mu does not have a 1500m time to qualify for the trials, she should not be allowed to enter that event. There are qualifying marks for a reason. You can't make exceptions. Now if she has a qualifying mark, then no problem. Otherwise she should have to enter an event she has a qualifying mark for.

sprcoach is right. this is an outrage. If she wanted to run the 1500m, she should have raced one during the season. USATF is not a practice session.
It's bad for the sport that USA's top distance runner never races. USATF is helping her dodge races by breaking their own rules.
Would they let Grant Fisher run the 10k trials without a 10k time? NO and they shouldn't.
