I'm asking this question because, on paper, it looks like I've got one of my strongest groups of incoming 9th grade boys ever. That being said, most of the kids I get have not run competitively so don't have any times to look at and a large number of my athletes have never done a sport prior to coming out for cross country
There really is no youth track in the area and the kids who've run competitively come through middle school programs that have about an 8 weeks season from day one of practice through their final meet.....so there really isn't a lot of time for them to develop. However, it is enough time for the kids to see improvement and get a little more excited about running in high school
To be clear, I don't think this is my strongest group of boys ever, it's just the one where I have times on more than 2-3 kids.
8th grade 1600 times
#1 5:24
#2 6:01
#3 6:09
#4 6:14
#5 6:22
Plus, I've got a guy that never ran over 800 in Middle School (2:41) but ran right with the 5:24 guy on a 1200 time trial last week (first week of summer workouts). The 6:01 guy actually beat both of them. All 3 went 4:2x after a month and a half of not really running.
Clearly, these times don't stack up to the incoming classes at places like Newberry Park, but I feel like it's a pretty good group relative to the other teams I've had and other small schools in our area.
What's it like where you're at?
