Who is the best marathon runner in Brevard NC? I would have to say Jon OBST! He has ran 3:04 on the roads and 3:13 on the trails. What a BadAss. He even walks like a BadAss. What a winner.

What? No way. I say it's some guy with the forst name of Chad. He's the real deal. He only eats bread from the bakery in town.
don't make light of the hill people, pussies.
Chad the woodsman is gaaayyyyy. those flame tats are just plain stupid.Same goes for his buddy Brain Herb
talking shit about someone you don't even know(standing next to him at the start of a race and saying good luck does not count) and is most likely light years faster than you will ever be. Keep up the good work friend. Moen would be ashamed of such behavior.
Thomas Cason the Brevard College xc/track coach is the best in my opinion. Obst SUCKS!!!!
Never heard of this Obst guy before. And because of that, he could not be near as good as Cason.
Where's the mountain man Bill Baldwin? Does he still haunt the woods up there?
Doesnt matter, b/c Badwin couldnt hang with Cason. Cason is 2:26 shape right now in the middle of winter. Romor has it he is going to run Myrtle Beach and if he was pushed he could run 2:20-22 and could go to the olympic trials. Dont count him out yet! OBST SUCKS. He is about a 19:40 5ker. Never trains. Just runs and at the same pace all the f'n time. If he would train properly he would be about an 2:48 marathon. What a waste of talent.
Say that to him at the bowling alley after a few beers. I heard he hit a guy in the parking lot with a broken bottle. He may be skinny, but he's scrappy. I don't think gay is the apropriate put-down for a guy who can probably fit all of his belingings into a grocery bag.
In serious answer to the likely foolish question, Chad the Woodsman is clearly the best currently active marathoner south of ZAP in the mountains if you take his top 5 finishes at the distance - who else has been to the Trials within that geographic restriction?
The days of runners from Brevard running fast marathons have come and gone. My vote would go for either Thomas or Chad for fastest marathoner from Brevard currently living there. They are the ONLY marathon runners living there to my knowledge.
Asheville has a couple. Jason Bodnar moved there a few months ago. I know Kim Pawalek for the women. Plus, a 2:12 wall-eyed former olympian. Randy Ashly, he either lives in Boone or Asheville one. He was pretty fast back in the day.
You mention Bill Baldwin. I heard he moved back there last year some time and got into coaching at the high school and some local runners. I saw a big group of his athletes in Charlotte and Greenville in the past few months. One guy is almost 200 pounds and just ran 16 flat for 5K. Now that's pretty sound coaching if you ask me.
Got Bill?
Also, to person who was talking shit about Chad and his flame tattoos. I challenge you to say anything to his face you coward. I think you are way out line about Brian as well.
Ronald Mexico, Esq.
If this is a serious thread, you cannot put Cason in the same league as Chad (and Cason will be the first to say so). As far as I know Chad has never lost to Cason in head to head competition and beat him by like 10 minutes in the US Trail Marathon Championships. Chad has run 2:21, 2:21, 2:23, 2:23, 2:24 for his four fastest road marathons. I don't think Cason has been under 2:30. Not to take anything away from Cason - he is a fine runner and a fine coach and obbiously his own running cannot be his only priority. I am just talking about performances on paper. Not to mention the Newt has a sub 14:20 5k and sub 30:00 10k.
"One guy is almost 200 pounds and just ran 16 flat for 5K"
Who the hell are you talking about? Coates Kennerly? He is certainly a big fella, but he is hardly 200 pounds. I'd be surprised if he is much over 165. He has improved alot, though, not to take anything away from the Goat or his coaching, but that is an exaggeration.
Joe Gibson
I would have to agree that it's Chad as well. Anyone who pretty much lives on a tree farm in order to succeed at the running game deserves a little credit (I think). Congrats, too, to Coates - talk about a guy who has had running help turn his life around. Definitely something to commend.
And Randy's a good runner and all - but 2:12?
Who cares? What is the best Pizza Place in Brevard?
Joe hasn't lived in Brevard for a long time - he is an assistant coach at JMU. I don't think he has ever run a full marathon, but I may be wrong.
If we looked at all-time best marathoners PR's for current Western North Carolina residents, Randy Ashley would probably be first and I reckon Norman Blair would be second - didn't Blair run 2:18 or something when he was competitive?
Actually, I think the olympian being referenced was K. Brantly of Arden, North Carolina. I think he moved back to florida. What about Jeff Cambell and Joe Gibson? Both of them live in Asheville/Brevard. If I remember correctly, like 4 of the Top 6 places at the US Trail Marathon Championships were all local runners from Brevard area. 234,239,240,241 or something like that. Probably find it on the usatf site. Also with regards to the person you are calling coates. I saw him and scott wolf at a trail marathon last year. Two brevard locals who went 1-2. He ran 16 flat! good for him, he's improved since last year.
You mountain men ever heard of Adam Pinkston?I think he was from the mountains ,not sure?
randy ashley has never broken 219. coach norm would be fastest. i would say that randy has run the fastest of any resident of the last 15 years though.
adam is getting back into shape. just had his shut in record broken this year. I will have to ask him his marathon pr, but norm say's he has run low 29's for 10K way back in the day.
