Its vastly underrated if you know how to use it. It is only as good as the prompts you give it and you can be very very specific. There are even temperature settings that most people dont use which determine the level of creativity/freedom in the given response. There are entire courses on how to properly prompt generative AI systems.

Rojo actually makes a good point. If you take the same question and put it in a google search, the first three results give you the correct answer. When you use ChatGPT, you are lead to believe that AI will give you the right answer because ChatGPT will reference the source of the info. But ChatGPT has no ability to check its information and is plagued by bogus reference. A reporter for the Grayzone used ChatGPT to help write an article on the Ukraine conflict. The result was a bunch of sources that ChatGPT looked to be legitimate, but were actually manufactured by Chat GPT out of thin air. Eternal shame on the "reporter" for failing to check the sources, but what is the point of Chat GPT if you have to check every source?

But more seriously, it isn't over-rated in my opinion (maybe the opposite actually), but it is misunderstood.

When it comes to translation it's beyond fascinating. I do think one day we will see an AI that can 'think' in the same way as a human - or at least be as good of an imitator/mimic to surpass a lot of human translators. It has to learn everything, but that doesn't mean that it cannot be done. My opinion only and a lot of people disagree with this.

This is a simplification, but it is a Large Language Model system, which means that it basically just maps out the next word it should probably say based on the previous words written. This means that if it is entirely dependent on the frequency/type of the data it was trained on. So for example, if it ingested enough stuff that said "men's" "1500" and "WR" aka "world" "record" it might get a chain of words like yours where it pulls the correct record holder, and a location where the world record was once set, but if the time wasn't as strongly coupled to those words as Mo Farah's 1500m european record was, then it might spit that out as the winning time.
