I know there are bonuses for time, but there's also a lot of money for just winning plus the prestige. So if you were doped and good enough to control the race and just win by the smallest amount that would seem to be less suspicous than cutting huge amounts of time and blowing everyone off the track.
Yes, there's money just for winning but if there's more for running faster times why would I not try for it? Why do I care if people think I'm doping if I'm confident I won't get caught? I'll just deny that I am.

Is there more long term $ winning vs times? I think so. I think each DL win is $10k plus another $40K for the overall win. At Majors like Worlds you get $70k. So unless you're setting a WR every other meet...

I could see that, additionally flat out greed may tell you to grab for every penny out there until you get caught.
