I agree that it’s a bit odd but hopefully you are able to read the texts and if they are benign then I think you should be good.

I worked with a HS coach who lost his job over a sexual allegation. After this incident I told my team to text the captains if they had any questions and limit texts to me unless it was an absolute emergency.

there may not be any bad intentions whatsoever, but i promise you it's a slippery slope.

i would say as a simple rule: coaches/teachers should not be texting their athletes privately, especially if the sun has gone down for the day.

Usually conventional stuff about movies, music, homework, colleges, future plans.

My kids don’t text their coach because their coach isn’t a fvcking weirdo that texts kids. Practice is an hour long and this is distance running. No exchange of information after practice can be THAT critical.
