How could this be? Absolutely perfect conditions? Every athlete in absolute peak shape of their lives? Timing system off?
Seriously, those are all possibilities.
100m:
Of the 23 guys who finished the 100m, an incredible 11 (!) set PB's...IN A PRELIM!...one of which was a CL(?) 9.89 (!)...and another 2 guys went SB's.
Of the guys who didn't PB/SB, a few shut it down when they realized they were out of contention--in fact, there were no PB's/SB's in the last 6 guys in the rankings: meaning that of the 17 guys who went really hard to try for a qualifying spot, an incredible 11/17 set PB's, and 2 set SB's. Again I need to say it: IN A PRELIM!
ALL TOP 6 OF THE 9 QUALIFIERS SET PB'S, AND 1 SET AN SB. 7/9!!
200m:
The 200m was equally insane, and even more stacked at the top--i.e. the results exclude some guys who may not have tried their hardest, because they knew they were out of it; they number probably at most, 10, and maybe fewer.
Of the 24 guys who finished the race, all 9 qualifiers set PB's, one of which was a CL(?) 19.76 (!), and 10 of the top 11 set PB's...IN A PRELIM! After a bunch of them had already ran a few fast races, including 6/9 200m PB qualifiers in the insane 100m!
We already have a wind-legal 9.89, tied for 2nd fastest in the world, a mere 0.01 behind the WL Kerley so essentially the same (excluding Omanyala's probably fake 9.84A), and a wind-legal 19.76, a straight-up 2nd fastest in the world!
IN THE PRELIMS.
It brings to mind the old adage "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is." I have no idea what is going on, but it fascinates me. I absolutely can't wait for more action on the track, from both the men and the women. Tonight we will see if the women can equal the insanity of the men's prelims.
W T F is going on. I have no idea.
