Did anyone see how Sam Ellis got DQ'd or have any more specific insight? Timing website says that he had 2+ steps on or inside the line. Was this justified?
long beach state athlete moved from 17th to 16th which makes him a second team all american. small move. not sure what that matters as a coach or a program but it made a difference.
Georgia's Will Sumner ran the 800m in a time of 1:46 flat, which was a personal best in Heat 1 of the 800 meter at the 2023 NCAA DI outdoor track and field c...
I'll give you that he stepped on the line, but how was it clearly for an advantage? He went straight to the back, so it's not like he was doing it to try to get out ahead of everyone else. And then he just closed harder than the rest of the heat for the 2nd big Q. There's no way it was material. Not to mention that, according to Powell, the protest was filed for Ellis cutting someone off, which clearly didn't happen, not for a lane violation.
That's a tough way to get DQ'd... not sure how any coach could have been close enough to the action (and paying attention to Ellis enough) to be able to protest that.
lol I did not try to look so close so as to see if he stepped on theline. I assume they did and he did. I was not implying he should have been DQd for stepping close to the line.
Andy Powell said a Long Beach State coach, who didn't even have a runner in the race, was the one who put in the protest.
I listened to the interview. The protest wasn't even about the lane infraction - the cited reason for the protest was something else - i think they complained Ellis cut someone off. But when they reviewed the race, they then noticed the lane violation and DQd for that. The interview is interesting b/c he questions whether a coach with no athlete in the race should even be allowed to protest and whether they can DQ for something not under protest.

So the protest was about one thing, which turned out to be a non-issue, and while looking they discovered something else and DQ'd him for that??? Double my Wowww!!!
Especially since it's kinda hard to tell from the video how egregious the lane violation was. And there is no way they had 5 different other camera angles like they do in hoops.
