Is it more efficient to have a big, powerful arm swing, or short, tight arm swings when running? I'm mostly interested in the marathon/half-marathon as well, I realize it may be different for shorter distances.

Umm you kind of answered your own question, just think about that for a second.
I'm not really sure how I answered it. I've always had a short arm swing and a short stride, but my old coach told me that in the longer distances I should focus on getting more out of my arms and it will help me in the long run, no pun intended. I'm not talking about swinging my arms out, but how high up or down.
Try swinging your arms from side to side above your head.
Try running with your hands in your pants.

Dude, I've been doing that for years. Get to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. Most of my running partners don't care for it, though, so I end up running alone a lot. Story of my life...
Don't listen to these tossers, just watch the Africans, watch, learn, practice and improve.
