Considering the majority of black American distance runners competing for the US are raised in Africa, It's a greatest accomplishment to see in American born black high schooler have success. I hope runners like him and Yared Nugue become great inspirations to all African-Americans doing distance running in America.

Golf is a way less accessible sport and Tiger Woods had a pro golfer as a dad. His story is not one of inspiration.
Plenty of black kids already run, but would rather be mediocre sprinters than try an 800. Hopefully it motivates more kids to not see distance running as a "white sport" and give it a try.
i don't wanna be that guy but... he's in the same camp as Nuguse and Athing for me. Not sure where his roots are from (Nuguse has Ethiopian roots). Congrats to him either way
It's a term for dumb people either way. If you were born in another country and immigrated to the United States then I could see referring to yourself as an (other country) American. If you're born in the US, then you're just American regardless of where your parents or grandparents or ancestors were born. Elon Musk, the African American, agrees.

Nobody sees distance running as a white sport. It’s sprinting that is seen as a black sport.
Black people are not oppressed in track and field . There have been black 800m competitors in the Olympics from the USA as well as longer distances. If anything , black people have a bigger advantage in track and field socially and financially because there are so many African American connections.

Sub 4 in HS, or at any age, is a great accomplishment Not sure it's any greater based on where the runner is born or what their skin color is but OK.
Very unfortunate that this thread celebrating a great achievement by a talented young man has immediately descended into furious debate over race. Letsrun at it's finest. This is why most of the running world refuses to associate with this website.
20 American highschoolers have broken 4 and Matsadsa is the first black American athlete to do so. This is something important worth acknowledging.

Pan Africanism is a beautiful idea but O.P. was not discussing the merits of Pan Africanism. O.P. is one of those narrow minded individuals who still think Barack Obama and Kamala Harris are African American role models.
