I just got the idea of starting a timing service for track and cross country meets. I could do it at any level - high school, college, professional, club, etc. What do you think? Is this a viable idea?

Can be a good business if you have the equipment and know what you are doing. Equipment will cost you 35K-50K to get started with a 3-camera, 3 computer set up. Based on another thread going on a related topic, it appears you could anticipate $600-$1,000 per day for a meet. If you figure there about 35 weeks in the track season and if you could book 30% of those weeks (lots of existing competition) you could gross about 10K-15K per year. It usually takes 2-4 people to run a big meet so you will need to split that money up. Unless you sink major bucks in equipment to qualify you for National events, you may just want to consider it as a side job.
If you're retired from a year job and looking for something to do on the weekends, sure. Remember you can pretty much say goodbye to your weekends and the nights before meets.
Big start up cost because you can't have just one of anything.
If you're interested I'd find a local company and say you're willing to help out for a while. You're not out any cash and you can see if you have the stomach for it before you commit.
