From what I understand, the consensus right now seems to be that it doesn’t matter, there is no increase in efficiency from heel striking to forefoot. Just don’t over-stride, as that is a “breaking” motion and will increase your injury risk.
Personally, I think forefoot is better because to me it looks smoother than heel striking.
There is a difference between (A) a heel strike - where the strike is loaded, vs (B) a strike where the heel makes contact first, but the transition to midfoot happens before loading. (A) is basically the same as overstriding and is bad. (B) is fine, and in fact, most elites run like this. Furthermore, the fact that most running shoes have positive stack (higher heel than toe) promotes this strike.
Foot strike is a function of speed. People walk with a heel strike and sprint with a forefoot strike. There are various foot strike positions in between depending on running pace.
It happens naturally and isn't nearly as important as many on here would have you think.
usually it's considered best to strike with your midfoot, but it doesn't matter that much. what matters more is the foot placement, you want it right under your center of mass. There is a correlation between foot placement and foot strike, but the placement is what actually matters

Ya, landing close in front of the body, creates possible also a flatter footstrike
