Why do people who put cream in their coffee refer to it as "creamer"? Why the -er?

“Cream” is an actual dairy product that comes out of a cow. “Creamer” is a corn syrup based concoction made to vaguely resemble cream. Two different products.

The “er” is there because very few people in America put cream in their coffee. Most people put something in their coffee that makes it creamy like half and half, milk, vegetable oil based creamer, or powdered creamer.
Similarly, if you put something in your coffee that makes it sweet like sugar, Splenda, agave, or saccharin, it can generically be called sweetener.
