I recently got back into racing and training for a fall marathon. Currently I run half of my training runs on the treadmill bc of my work schedule and know that the Apple Watch is very inaccurate on the treadmill.
i started my long marathon training runs outside and was wondering - is it worth it to purchase a Garmin for marathon training or does the Apple Watch due the job with pacing accuracy?
The only thing accurate about Apple watches is their ridiculous MSRP. Go buy a refurbished Garmin. You can get a Garmin 35 off of Amazon for less than $100.

garmin by a long shot. if you have unlimited money go for the enduro 2, otherwise go for the forerunner solar options or just the forerunnner series.
Get a simple gps watch. All the fancy features, useless. You just need something to help you track miles. The Apple watch, forget it. Too complex. You need real buttons while running, not a single button that spins nor a touch screen. I have an old Forerunner 35 that was under $100. It's easily accurate enough to see training numbers after the run. I can flip screens or set a lap in one button press with out looking.
Garmin by a mile. Apple Watch is better for everyday wear if you're an iPhone user and fine for casual time/distance measuring, but Garmin is much more usable for tracking serious training, inputting workouts, and the physical buttons work better when you're covered in sweat. The basic Garmin watches are fine and cost a lot less than Apple Watches.
My comments don't include the newish Apple Watch Ultra. It's supposed to be better for stuff like running, but I haven't used it myself. It's expensive.
I would agree with the comments about the Timex Ironman if all your running is on a track or the same measured route, but that's not what most people do. If you're out running different routes on streets, trails, etc., a GPS watch that measures your distance is a big help.
