Obviously you can’t really compare times from two different races but would have loved to have seen how Hobbs would have fared if he had run in Rabat. On paper his 3:32.61 was ever so close to Jakob’s 3:32.59!
I’m sorry, are you bragging about predicting Nuguse would finish 2nd to the best 1500 runner in the world?
If you’re claiming that today’s race was evidence that Nuguse can’t run an extremely fast time outdoors, that’s nonsensical. He beat a 3:29.56 guy, a 3:30.12 guy, a 3:30.20 guy, and he ran the last 800 .23 seconds faster than Ingrebrigtsen.
Indoor tracks have gotten fast but there’s no clear indication they’re faster than outdoor. The main reason why so many athletes are running fast indoor miles/3ks/5ks in the United States is that time trials can be perfectly controlled (no wind or inclement weather, pacing feedback every 30 seconds or less) and there’s now a culture of targeting these time trials from December till March.
The BU track is easily as fast as the fastest outdoor Tracks in the World for running the mile. There is an obvious reason why so many people have their all time pb’s There. Johnny gregorek Even Runs sub 3.50 mile There which is much faster than he ever has done outdoors
What amazes me is how so many people think they are such experts that they are dissecting what Nuguse did wrong. Somebody said he didn't try to win and some said he that he should have gone by Hoare earlier or sprinted sooner or simply run faster (??)
What people are not processing it seems is that Nuguse just set a Personal Best! The fastest he has ever run 1500 meters (I forget the indoor times but that is a different beast).
Considering how fast he has been improving, this year, this is another step in the right direction. OK. For now, only Jakob has shown that he can beat Nuguse. But I think this young guy has an incredible future and may well be beating (sometimes) Ingebrigtsen in the future.
I didn’t say that BU is slower than outdoors. Actually the fact that there is no weather means it’s more reliably fast than any outdoor track in the world.
The main reason why so many have run their all time PBs at BU is because people now travel there in droves with the express purpose of time trialing miles (which are rarely contested outdoors anyway). Gregorek’s 1500 PB converts to 3:51.65, which isn’t a world away from 3:49.98 - and he’s just one example. The most anomalous indoor PBs off the top of my head are Sam Atkin’s 7:31.97 and 13:03.64 - those are hard for me to wrap my head around.

I'm a Hoare and Nuguse fan, it will be epic when they beat Ingebrigtsen, especially at a title race. They will. However, last night it didn't look like to me Ingebrigtsen just beat them by a second. It looked to me a controlled easy run from the front just get it done while Hoare was doing everything he could to stay on and couldn't. As already mentioned Nuguse would have been better off staying on Ingebrigtsen instead of his teammate, but he was still requiring a full effort to be there. Ingebrigtsen looked like he could have busted out a sub 3:30 if required, it wasn't.

When are you expecting this take down of Jakob to occur? As you point out, yesterday Jakob looked to be comfortable and in complete control. He’s stronger than both Yared and Olli, and honestly, he’s just as fast as Yared over the last 200 off any pace. Of course both Yared and Olli are great, but nothing that’s happened to date that suggests they are ready to beat Jakob when it counts. Can this change, I guess so, but it’s mostly wishful thinking right now.

You are right, but comparing them to stocks I think Hoare and Nuguse are on the upswing and more to gain. Ingebrigtsen is amazing right now, but has he peaked? he was progressing until 2:28.68 in 2020, but since then about the same. he will continue with these performances and above all finds a way to win, but here in the next 12-24 months I think we're going to see some less dominating wins and even some losses as others play catch up.
So I think there was definitely an underlying narrative on this thread that due to a 3.47.2/7.28 indoor season, the "logical" next step for Nuguse was to just springboard into the outdoor season and claim the prize scalp of J.I who "only" ran 3.32 for 1500m indoors then cleaned up in easy championship races at the Euro indoors.
Well with all due respect to Nuguse who is still a fantastic runner, Jakob absolutely dominated that race and it wasn't really close. What I witnessed was a classic season opening effort from a runner at a different level - 54.2 for the last lap just measuring his effort in the last 200m, with Nuguse in warface mode in the last 120m as Jakob just looked around waving his finger as he crossed the line.
That race was zero indication of a guy who has peaked (Jakob) and honestly, if we want to still be contending that the indoor season isn't a priority for guys and the environment is much slower than outdoors, then that race would be a concern if I'm Nuguse. I don't believe that's the case though so I think it's a good start for Nuguse but Jakob is quite frankly still light years ahead of him and irrespective of last years WC result, anyone else on the planet.
