I've been running for a couple of years, but I was probably doing most of it wrong, and so here I am.
I have never been able to run 5km under 20 minutes. I run 50-60 kilometers a week. Now I'm just coming back after an injury, and so far my best time for 5km is 21:59
Yesterday I did a test and for 1 mile I did 6:50 or 4:15 average per kilometer. I did the first mile in 3:59, then 4:17 and the last 830m in 4:30 I was disappointed because the year before I ran it with an average of 3:53 or 6:15 per mile.
I think the problem lies with my fitness, that I can't maintain such a pace. In the same way, once I tried to maintain 12 times 400m 1:32 I couldn't do it after 6 repetitions, but I had very short intervals and didn't rest on it.
So, what would you guys advise me to do? Start building a base of say 3-6 months and introduce some faster runs in between treshold and intervals?
I wish it was a troll, but it's not. I've read a lot on the forum how people are running 15, 17 minutes or even 18, and I just can't do it.
I read that there is such a thing as summer of malmo. To double the number of kilometers and so on. Maybe it really needs a decent kick in the ass?
Besides, I'm doing core. I would describe myself as a moderately active person, but active.
