YOUR GD EFFIN RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY SHOULD BE DQ'D AND BANNED FROM HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!! JAIL TIME IS FINE WITH ME!!!!!! WHY??? THAT'S THE RULE!!!!!!!
what rule says that's a tie? I say whoever's chest crossed first wins, hands or not.
Now, putting a board across their chests and somehow keeping it absolutely parallel with the finish line, so they cross at exactly the same time, that's not right.
As a race official, I would give the win to one of my random choosing and second place to the other. If anyone insists it was a tie, they will likely not have the video evidence to prove me wrong. Imagine saying "But we wanted to tie.....!" wah wah wah
There's nothing about it that's unfair as far as I can tell. If someone has made it a DQ issue maybe it's because they don't want to deal with lots of people doing this and ties.

I don't understand why people keep bringing up the issue of ties on these threads. Standard timing equipment can determine who finished first between a 100m guy who ran 10.675 and one who ran 10.674. Do you honestly believe that simply by holding hands, two runners will be able to intentionally finish in a time that is identical to the thousandth of a second, and thus secure a tie?

No I don't believe that but I do believe in most races i.e. road races that people holding hands across the finish line would be given the same finishing position.

At least they seem to think they'll get a tie.
Anyhow if they block me from passing between them, they will tie for the same position of DQ. No impeding!

Having seen finish line photos posted here over the years, where they put the line indicating the time can sometimes be arbitrary/a judgment call once you get into the thousandths depending on the tightness/looseness of the clothing, position of the arms, etc. They will put that line down somewhere, and people don't usually think to question it, but that doesn't mean it's 100% accurate.
In answer to the thread title, I'd say yes. Makhloufi was disqualified from the Olympics in 2012 for lack of effort in the 800m heat the evening before the 1500 final. He appealed on medical grounds and was reinstated. If there is a rule about removal due to lack of effort, then perhaps holding hands across the finish line should be subject to it as well. It is a race, after all (perhaps different rules for 'fun runs'?).
