Can you give us some info on how these high school 4:30/4:40 milers turn into 14:20/29:40 Midwest beasts? High mileage, other factors? What's the weather like at Grand Valley State throughout the winter?

Thank you. Go Lakers! (GVSU Lakers, that is, not their more famous counterparts somewhere in L.A.).

They are indeed a high mileage program. Historically, however, they break the team into training groups of varying levels based on where the athlete is at. They don't just through you in over your head. Runners work their way up to the top group as they progress and are able to handle it.

The winter weather is what one should expect in an area that gets lake effect snow. Plenty of snow and windy days.

Jerry Baltes seems like a great coach, taking humble Midwest 4:40 kids to National D2 level and producing countless 14:30/30:00 type runners, sub elite. Seems like a nice guy too. Go GVSU Lakers!

They get more than just 4:40 kids.

Sub-30 isn't impressive.

Maybe one of them would be sub-30 without supershoes.

But at least you have some people to get all giddy about when they throw down "beastly" 2:16 marathons in the next few years. 🙄

These 14:20/29:40 Midwest blue collar GVSU type runners can get down to 2:10:00-2:12:00 in post grad years, if they stay healthy. Go GVSU Lakers, Midwest monsters. These blokes are underrated. Wooderson and Fraaza have bright futures. Midwesterners deliver authentic quality. No b.s. Dathan Ritz and others. Kudos.

Wrestling is a good explanation of tough, blue collar Midwestern cultural. Good transfer to distance running. High pain tolerance, tough Midwest winters, gritty cities like Grand Rapids, etc.

Tanner Chada (SR) of GVSU finished 2nd in 29:47, over the 10k course, Caleb Futter, GVSU, Soph, 14th 30:11.8, Brock Wooderson, GVSU, FR, 30:30, 39th and Koby Fraaza, also Frosh, 70th 30:55.5, and the others from GVSU incl. Hylen, JR, (124th 31:34), Marten, Soph, 125th 31:35.4, Spaastra, GVSU, Soph, 31:42.3.

All these monster Michigan Lakers are returning presumably for the 2023 cc season. These Frosh from GVSU are super strong.

What does it take to place top 10 Div2 CC? Well, going by stats, I'd say minimum 8:00/13:40/28:30 type runners, and 4:05.00 mile speed, even for distance guys, would help.

Dillon Powell, winner of D2 cc last December, Colorado school of Mines, has best times of 4:05.69, 13:28.46 (Ind), 28:22.78.

Tanner Chada, GVSU, who finished 2nd has bests of, 4:03.74 (Ind), 7:56.09 (Ind), 7:57.45 (outdoors), 13:37.81 (outdoors), 28:46.14.

This means the top 10 guys at NCAA Div 2 cc could walk into most (all?) D1 teams and be welcomed with open arms.

People who think D2 is a mediocre League should revise their thoughts. The top 100 are all studs in their own areas.

I should add I'm not knocking these guys, it's always great to see improvement from high school to college to beyond. But if Ghost1 could convince me I can improve 30 seconds on my college 5k, I wouldn't stop him...
