For instance in a 2021 Tokyo 1500 m, why would Hassan try to front run that race and kick with 2 laps to go, when she's gotta be potentially the fastest 200 and 400m closing speed in the race... And she had already ran four races including heats...
Anyway she often seems to try to kick from 800 m out and I guess my point is isn't she basically one of the fastest final 200 m runners in the world in anything from the 1500 m up...
Maybe she wouldn't have won that 1500 but she certainly could have beat Laura Muir in a kick for silver...
she's a great runner but just curious why she seems to always want to do these heroic 800 m kicks...
Is there a method to her madness like do other top women really have faster closing 300 meters than her?
I'm surprised in basically any race she runs she doesn't run it just like she did in the marathon and just sit on everyone until the last 200 to 400 meters?
Someone who really knows the best women's distance runners in the world give me a heads up on this? Like what women can outkick Hassan in 1500 m, 5K, 10K?
Yeah that Tokyo 1500 was kind of strange. Maybe she felt she could run away with it. But I have seen sometimes where she starts her kick from 800 meters out and then gets caught. She probably has the best closing 400 m speed for anything over 5K.

She has to start that far out because it takes more distance to get to her top speed, while most runners can just hit the switch and reach their top speed within 200m.
In the 1500 if any of these two are with her with 400m to go they could easily outsprint her: Faith KIPYEGON Gudaf TSEGAY
in the 5000m these two could outsprint her with 400m to go: Letesenbet Gidey (world record holder outdoor 5k/10k 14:06/29:01) Gudaf TSEGAY (2nd all time indoors 1mile/3k 4:16/8:16)

Interestingly, Gidey comprehensively outkicked Hassan in the final lap of the WC 10000m, closing the final lap in 60 sec, this is remarkable as Gidey has been easily outkicked by Hassan many times previously. Perhaps Gidey has decided she can kick after all. She also outkicked Obiri for the win
We can say the same thing with well over 90% of 400m dash sprinters. We can ask why do so many 400m dash athletes sprint from 100m to 200m within 0.2 of a second of 100m dash personal best then do a death march more than 20% slower than 100m p.b. from 300m to 400m.
We can ask why do so many 800m dash athletes run the first lap less than 3 1/2 seconds slower than 400m p.b. then fall apart on last lap.
Is it better to race cautiously and wait until final 100m? Anything can happen when an athlete waits that long and most are not good.

It’s very easy to judge tactics after a race. Hassan is more experienced than anyone here. She goes when she thinks the time is right.

I think a lot of it's just personality too... She's pretty adventurous so... But I still don't get the Tokyo 1500... I mean how is she going to win with that strategy?
Kipyegon and Hassan have had countless 1500 battles for nearly a decade. Many have been classic head to head all out sprints over the final 200 meters. Kipyegon has only a modest head to head edge but part of that is that Hassan has beaten her a few times during global prelims.
Kipyegon is the only one who gets in Hassan's head. Hassan knows she can out finish anyone else, but not Kipyegon. Side by side has during Diamond League press conferences, Hassan has said, "I am fast but not as fast as Faith." That's why Hassan changes her tactics against Kipyegon, often overreacting to the prior meeting.
Hassan got it exactly right in Doha world championships 2019, when Kipyegon was coming off maternity leave. Several of us posted here that Hassan should abandon her typical late strategy and instead push the pace early. She did that and Kipyegon could not match. Hassan looked absolutely startled at what she had achieved.
They did not face each other again for nearly 2 years. Advantage Kipyegon. The Doha experience taught her that she had to raise her game to defend in Tokyo. As great as Kipyegon already was, she's now stronger and faster thanks to the defeat in Doha.
Hassan made a mistake in facing Kipyegon twice in 2021 prior to Tokyo. She should have left Kipyegon guessing. Instead she defeated Kipyegon again, which motivated Faith even more. Kipyegon turned the tables in Monaco with one of her best performances ever.
Kipyegon soared in confidence and it hasn't gone away. Kipyegon now believes she can handle Hassan regardless of tactics. But there's no question Hassan is better off in a cat and mouse race followed by all out sprint over 200 meters. They are close to par. It's not competitive if Hassan decides to push the pace and allow Kipyegon to sit behind her. Bye bye.
Others are now a problem also, like Tsegay and Welteji. That's why I believe Hassan will run some 1500s but not at global events.
The late defeat to Gidey last year means nothing. Gidey improved her kick but it was 90% more a case of Hassan not being motivated or in shape for the bulk of 2022. If Hassan is right she still has at least a couple more years of being able to out sprint Gidey with ease.
Agreed with above. Hassan thinks she has to run away from Kipyegon. She does not feel that way about anyone else. With Tsegay in the 5,000 it would be interesting because that feels like an even battle if they both leave it to the last 300.
