the other day while i was running i was trying to rank bob kempainen among US marathoners...i thought of it again after the discussion on kennedy's place in history after he announced his retirement.
i'll state up front, in the interests of full disclosure, that kempainen was my idol in college, and that his vomit-in-stride to win the 1996 OT was my single favorite sporting moment (other than the mets winning the world series in '86).
i may be crazy, but i place him sixth, behind shorter, edelin, salazar, rodgers, and meb (not in order), and just ahead of bachelor, moore, spence, and kardong.
i'm not counting khannouchi, although i probably should.
