Can’t find anything for under $55 per day plus all those crazy taxes. What’s an acceptable rate that you guys would pay?
Rental cars in HI are theft magnets. Everyone there knows which cars are rentals and which are not. Cheaper rental cars are bigger magnets ... the thieves have keys and the renters are less like to make noise if ripped off. If you leave anything in the car, don't expect to find it when you return.
It’s seasonal. On a busy day, tourists will outnumber rental cars, prices will be high. $55 a day isn’t crazy, though look for a booking site that includes all fees. Costco, if you have membership. Discounthawaiicarrental is also acceptable. There are 2nd rate local companies, but you’ll get a clunker and usually they aren’t much cheaper. Turo is also plentiful.
Car rentals are nothing compared to hotel cleaning/miscellaneous fees. Enjoy booking your room and watching the price double through the most insane fees in the US!
I feel your pain. Rental cars in the US are ridiculously expensive. You're gonna have to just suck it up. Side note: I was in Portugal two weeks ago. Rented a car for a 4 day road trip. The entire rental cost of the car for four days was 120 euros including full insurance.

True. A relative of mine had a rental window smashed. Worst was dealing with the repairs, insurance, "loss of use" claim by the company..It was a total shttshow. Way to encourage tourism...

They got you by the balls (or p****y). You need a car, and you don't really have a choice. I was in Kauai in 2019, don't remember the exact amount but it was more like 3x what you want to pay, making the mistake of not reserving a car ahead of time. Yes, that's trying all the agencies (a lot of them the same company) both online and in person, where they let people line up and be afraid they won't get anything at all.
Yeah, car rental rates in Hawaii can be rough—especially with all the fees. Honestly, if you’re going, it might be worth looking into alternatives like Turo or even scooters depending on the island. Anyone tried those and had a good (or bad) experience?

I haven't been to HI in awhile but last time I was in Kauai it was clear that if you didn't arrive at the rental car counter early in the day it was slim pickings what cars were available. If you plan to drive alot a car that gets good mileage is also a consideration since price of gas is higher there too.
