Or since the criteria is getting a medal in both could a 25 year old Eliud Kipchoge somehow medal at 1500m and the marathon. It is an incredibly difficult ask for a man. Other long shot possibilities were Hicham, Rod Dixon, Geb and Kenenisa.

Yeah but nobody is going to do it of course. As far as history goes Wang Junxia could possibly have done it with her 3:51, 29:31 and 2:24 marathon all done in the same year.

Steve Ovett in 1980 may have been a contender training 1500/5K rather than 800/1500.

He had ran a 1:05 half marathon a couple of years prior in borrowed trainers as a lark, easily beating some notable top British marathoners.

But the marathon in those Games was held the same day as the 1500 final. He might also have had trouble in the Moscow heat, as he did in the 1500.

How can you not mention Farah among all those? He ran 3:28 and 2:05.

In terms of the present day, I’d say Hassan for the women’s, because obviously, and Ingebrigtsen for the men’s, as although he hasn’t ran anything even close to a marathon, or all the current 1500m runners he easily has the best long distance capabilities
