In October 2021, I first started experiencing achilles pain. I didn’t really know how to treat it, so I lowered my mileage for a few months (40ish). It didn’t get any better, and I jumped back into regular mileage (around 80 mpw) from January 2022 until May 2022. I didn’t do anything to treat it in those months as I didn’t know anything about achilles injuries and pretty much assumed it was like all other injuries I’ve had that I could just run through and they eventually got better. In June, it really started to bother me, so I lowered my mileage (to about 20) and started to go to PT. PT didn’t help. I went to another PT which also didn’t help. I eventually scheduled an appointment with a foot doctor who did an X-ray and diagnosed me with insertional achilles tendonitis but with no haglunds deformity or calcification/bone spur. He wanted to try tenex before he tried something more invasive.
I had tenex in October 2022. I took four months off of running and started running again in early February. I’ve been going to PT ever since. My physical therapist has me doing the weighted eccentric exercises to flat floor. He also has me doing a lot of balance exercises and hip/glute work. I’ve seen no progress. I’ve switched shoes (to 12 mm drop), gone in for weekly massages, done the night splint every night, heated before every run, done dry needling every other week… I still can’t run half a mile without pain (have only gotten up to 6 mpw). My PT says that it’s okay to run through pain, but I’ve seen no progress since tenex and it has been 7 months…
So I guess I’m wondering if this is normal? Is it normal to experience tendon pain 7 months after a procedure like tenex? At this point, is surgery the only solution? I’m feeling really hopeless as nothing I’ve tried has done anything to improve the pain… I was really hoping to avoid the surgery (doctor wants to do tendon debridement and make my calf longer). Basically I just want to know if it’s worth waiting to see if anything I’m doing suddenly starts working for a few more months or if I should book an appointment for the surgery. I’m 26, but I really don’t want to waste any more time on this injury as it has been 1.5 years.
Thank you for any recommendations/advice!
