I want to replace the composite video connection from my TV to my DVD player and back with an S-video connection, but I read that S-video only carries video and not audio. There are no separate inputs for audio on my TV, and there are no separate inputs or outputs for audio on the DVD player. I am confused. Is it that an S-video cord only carries a video signal, or that S-video itself is only a video signal and audio is carried separately on the same cord?

Standard S-Video cables carry a video signal only. There are 4 wires in the cable, basically 2 signals and 2 ground wires. There has to be a separate audio output somewhere on the DVD player. It may be that the DVD player uses non-standard cables, but I don't have any way of knowing without looking at it.

bingo. i believe that s-video automatically "supersedes" composite when both are connected.
The only audio connections are the ones that go with the composite video wires. When I select from the various inputs from the menu on my TV I have the two separate options of antenna (which is where the composite signal is connected) and S-video. If I select S-video will that take the video from the S-video connection and the audio from the antenna connection? That doesn't seem right, because if I have no S-video cord plugged in and I select S-video from the menu I get no audio.
I know I should read the manual for my tv but I can't find it.
what I meant by "replace" was not to actually take one out and put in place another, but to add an S-video cord and use that signal instead.
i'll bet selecting the input is merely selecting VIDEO input, not audio.
Nobody understands what you're talking about.
S-Video is only video. It's combined with the two channels of Audio.
The back of your tv, if it has an S-Video connection, it also probably has a little white line that is drawn towards a set of audio inputs, plug in there.
If you need more help than this you're going to have to give a model number of tv, and maybe a picture of the back.
You could always try plugging in the S-Video cord and see whats going on. It's called experimenting.

the whole reason i'm asking is because i don't have an s-video cord and need information before i go to the store and buy one. it's easier to get the info online than any other way. and if i cant get audio while watching an S-video feed with my TV then theres no point in getting an S-video cord.

http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/1189/p12103438zl.jpgi took out the cords for a better picture, but as it is right now i have an RF cord connected to the antenna/decoder connection, and a set of composite video cords connected to the VCR-AUX input connections. both are coming from my dvd player (cable signal is routed through dvd player via RF cord).
and as you can see the only audio inputs accepted are those that correspond to VCR on the menu screen. the thing i don't understand is how i would be able to get audio if i select S-video from the menu screen, since the VCR-AUX inputs seem to be separate from the S-video input, both on the menu screen and at the back of my tv.

To use an S-Video cable you need the composite audio cables plaugged in in the same way you have them now, just not the yellow video part. S-Video is not like the RF connection in that it is only video. To watch an S-Video feed with audio, you need to connect the audio cables to whatever you are getting the S-Video feed from.

I'm guessing that's a Zenith, built sometime between 1994 and 2000.
See how the S-Video Jack is in the same sector as the Composite Vid/Audio inputs? BOOM! Got it done.
I mean, it's S-Video, not freaking DVI-HDMI, it's a cheap cord, go get it over with. You probably have about 4 differnt video options off the DVD, but one sound. The TV will always look for the Sound in, and it's a simple deal. It's not like they're going to make a TV without sound on the S-Video setting.
I have a similar Zenith, go buy the cord, it's cheap.
Do component cables offer a much better picture quality? Just curious, b/c they are way more expensive than your typical cables.
Or it one of those things that where to see a difference you'd have to have an awesome tv anyways?
