I'm decided to end my 3 year and 9 day running streak today. I've been remarkable injury free during this 3+ year stretch, which made it a fun challenge. That ended when my left plantar fascia started hurting 2 months ago, mildly at first. It went away with reduced mileage and stretch/strengthening work, but keeps coming back every time I try to build back up or do speed workouts.
Rather than drop down to painful, very short runs for days/weeks/months and hope it heels, I'm going to truly rest. A running streak is a great and fun challenge if you're healthy and it serves you. If it means I'm torturing myself, running through and prolonging injury, it's outlived it's purpose. I could run through the pain, and have been. But I see no reason to prioritize painfully maintaining a streak to serve the streak itself, over getting back to enjoyable running that serves me, as soon as possible.
Technically it doesn't end until midnight tonight, but I'm relieved at the thought that it's going to be over.
