Majoring in engineering and running track is a very difficult combination. It will be very difficult for you to have any lab classes spring semester due to your practice schedule, which can put you behind on your major track. Fortunately, the 800 doesn’t require high mileage so you won’t suffer in your training from the lack of sleep associated with the workload majoring in engineering.
Given that you can run a good 800 pretty much anywhere, I would just pick a good engineering school. Stanford, Colorado, Michigan, and Texas should be top of your list if you’re a great runner. Illinois, Cal-Berkeley, Purdue, Penn State, Virginia Tech, Georgia Teach are other power conference options. Most of the big power conference state schools do have engineering, but they’re not as good of schools. Lower D1, think Cal Poly (great school), Columbia, Lehigh, or UCSD.
There aren’t many D2 schools that have great engineering programs, but I would take a look at Colorado School of Mines.
Plenty of great engineering schools are D3, including Carnegie Mellon, RPI, Rose Hulman, and Cal Tech just to name a few.
