We've all heard of fast sprinters who are in football or basketball and have no interest in running track, but this is a different story from the distance side of the sport.
There's a small group of folks at my school who run around the neighborhood most evenings and nights on a fairly regular basis. We call them the "Night Roamers", and they're a pretty loosely organized group of friends who sometimes run together but not always. I've seen them bike, but most of the time, they run.
They do a sizable amount of running and go pretty fast at times, but almost none of them tracks their mileage or how fast they're going. They claim to run "whatever and wherever they feel like" which usually ranges from 30-90 minutes at a pace that appears to oscillate between 4:30/mile and 8:00/mile. Their apparent motivation is exploring the area, running "routes they've never done before" and sneaking into gated communities.
This is probably the runner's version of the Dead Poets Society, and they absolutely refuse to join the track or XC team. They said the afternoon practices are too hot, the morning practices are too early, and the whole thing is just too structured. They don't mind racing and competition but want to do it on their own terms and not spend most of the day at meets.
Well guess what, last night, I finished my long run on the track and was planning on doing some strides when I saw the Night Roamers show up to do a time trial. They pick what appears to be a completely random distance/event - run one lap in lane 1, another lap in lane 2, another in lane 3, and so on until lane 9.
2 of them finish in under 12 minutes. I did the math and found that this comes out to ~5:00/mile pace for ~2.4 miles - much faster than our top 3200 guy, who can't break 10. The remaining guys are further behind, but they all break 15.
Thoughts? I wonder how many other schools have fast distance guys who aren't on the team for whatever reason.
