Luke never won his conference meet 1600, despite being an early talent (4:26 fr, 4:18 soph). In grades 10 and 11 he beat Waskom, but lost to another Luke, Luke George of Issaquah. Senior year, Waskom finally beats Houser at Kingco, but they both lose to Daniel Maton at state.
You might say that Luke was fueled by victory hunger. Glad to see him get his repast.

I love this. What happened to Maton? Google suggests he’s still at UW but not on the roster/running anymore?

If the race would have been 3 yards longer Isaac Basten would have got the job done!!!!
Look, I do like Basten but man he really manages to find the worst possible positions to be in. He very well may have been able to win that race. Boxes himself in, had to chop his steps with less than 100m to go and reaccelerate and still almost swiped it from the inside. Hopefully he puts it together for outdoors because if he just gives himself some more room to kick maybe he can get that outdoor title.
This is actually proof that Powell has gotten extremely lucky to have such incredible running talent in his backyard. There are areas in the country that don't have any sub 4:30 milers for 100 miles.
The SeaTac area has always been loaded with talent. They could keep doing with forever
I still think that Powell is a tremendous coach but I agree it’s a bit crazy how much talent comes out of here. Just in the last year, runners in this area set the 11, 12 (same runner), and 14 year old two-mile world records. Odd given that there isn’t exactly what I’d consider a serious youth club/training scene. (There are USATF clubs but even the most serious are pretty laid back compared to other parts of the country).

I generally agree, but Rain City Flyers are loaded with talent at the moment. I keep bumping into them running incredible stuff on their own. In a few years the high schools will be incredible if they stick around* and keep developing.

*rumors of kids going to OR next year
BTW Gorze is going to UW next year!
Our paths overlap a considerable amount if you know that bit about the OR possibility 😂
Agree that RCF has been loaded with talent. Schneider to Recupero to Herb/Davis etc is nuts. The RCF coach seems to not develop them much, although that’s probably a good thing when compared to the alternative. Maybe it’s just that Seattle is big and RCF has basically been the only show in town for a long time.
Notably, I don’t think either Waskom or Houser (or maybe anyone at UW?) were part of that club.
Seattle area has a ton of distance talent. 2nd (Markezich) and 3rd (Roe) in the women's 3K and 6th (Reiss) in the women's mile are also from western Washington state in addition to Hauser and Waskom. In fact, all 5 of them were in the same high school class (2019)
Yes, the Greater Seattle metropolitan area has produced a lot of very good runners and this was very noticeable at the NCAA indoor meet this past weekend. The area about 40 miles to the north of Seattle and 40 miles to the south covers a lot of talent.

I don't know who Davis is but I watched another Herb teammate (same age) drop a 5:01 in a P.E. class, no warmup and weaving through the entire class as most of them walked and shuffled in groups. He said it was a PR, but he clearly is in 4:40s shape anyway.
I first saw Amy-Eloise Markovich-Neale when she was 10 running a 3K at an Edmonds all-comers. Seemed kind of intense, I wondered if she might burnout before maturity. Nope.
It's been fun seeing all of this as it picks up steam.
