Has anyone suffered from FAI hip impingement or any career ending injury?

Fortunately I cannot relate, but so sorry to hear what you are going through. My only advice is to make sure you are getting help on the mental side. I know what a dark place my mind can go to even if I am only off running for a few weeks.

Go see Dr Philippon in Vail CO, or Brian Kelly in NYC … they can address your FAI and get you back running.. if you don’t address it you are going to destroy your hip socket.

I've had this with labral tears in both hips about 15 years ago. I ran collegiately. I had surgery to repair the torn labrums and shave down the impinged bone. Both hips have been absolutely 100% since. I had mine with Dr. David King, who studied under Phillippon. He was fantastic. I believe King is still practicing in the St. Louis are, depending on where you are located. Get the surgery. Otherwise, you labrums will deteriorate and you will eventually wind up with arthritis in your hips.

I'll say too, this is not as uncommon as you might believe. It tends to show up more quickly in athletes, but many people have it and it does not show up until later in life. However, it can be easily corrected with surgery.

I got the surgery taken care of about a year ago, is it normal to experience pain or soreness a year from the surgery, I am having a hard time distinguishing whether I feel pain in my hips from surgical recovery or from running soreness.

Sorry, I missed that in your original post. Have you spoken with your doctor about the continuing pain? I can say in my experience I felt very good 6 months out. If you have gone through PT and your doc sees no other issues, you might still have some imbalances that need to be ironed out. It might also be worthwhile to get a second opinion.

If it were me, I would lay off running for awhile. If you can take up cycling without pain, maybe pursue that for awhile. It should strengthen up your hips and give you something else to focus on while allowing your body to continue to recover. Sorry to hear about your continued issues. Give it some time and try to be patient. I know a year seems like a long time, but in terms of healing from pretty extensive surgery, it really isn't that long. Try to stay positive and keep working to find a solution, whether that means a doctor, more PT, and finding things on your own that work. Keep in mind too that if pain allows, there are options other than running that can help you maintain fitness until you can get back to running without pain.

I have been working my butt off with calisthenics and weight training, I don't know if this bio of my body can help but I am 5,10.5 5,11 all muscle. Injuries are like the last to happen to me. You said there is a imbalance in my hips but I am not sure, I have only been running 3-4 miles these past 2 weeks. I have been doing lots of strenuous core training to failure so I have been releasing energy. Basically this past year it has been cycles were I would build up to running up to 6 miles a day then I would plateau and start walking again but for the most part I have been getting quite a bit of running in and a few fartleks and longruns.

I have also been doing quite a bit of cycling to and from where I run and lift. I keep hoping to God that my legs are sore and mind is just going crazy.

Things have been going pretty well for the most part and you may have just had it better than I did.

As you can tell from my username I suffer from social anxiety and do running is my medicine but because I couldn't run for a long time showing up to physical therapy was quite difficult but I completed the first session fully for the 1st leg and completed about 4 weeks for the second leg and did the rest on my own.

I was top 30 at the marathon trials years ago. Ran 130 miles a week. Tore my achilles and calf. Tried to get back into running again only to have the other achilles give out. I tried everything you can think of for treating achilles injuries for nearly a decade but was never able to return to running. Cross training was never an option as it hurt too much. I was a PA at the time and on my feet all day. Couldn’t handle that anymore due to pain even after surgery so I switched to a hospital administration position. I tried so hard to get back to running and to the level I once was. Held the belief that one day I was going to wake up and everything was going to go back to normal for 15ish years.

Eventually, I started caring a little less. I’m old now. However, when I’m driving home from work in the summer in the evening and I see folks out running I do get a little jealous. Being able to run healthy is such a gift, and I wish I would have appreciated it more during my time.

The point of this post is not to be depressing. I wish at the time I had realized that there are so many more incredible aspects of life out there. I had my heart set on running far and fast and completely blew off amazing opportunities and people because I was feeling sorry for myself for so long. Don’t make my mistake! I have an incredible wife (who regularly crushes sub 2:40 marathons) and four fabulous kids. I get to take my kids to the park on the weekends in the mornings while my wife is doing her long run. I get to go to their practices and school activities after work instead of worrying about getting a double in. I can be 100% there for my wife before her races and handle all of the logistics and everything so she doesn’t have to think of anything but her race. Vacations are about truly relaxing and spending time with my family instead of worrying about when I’ll have time to fit my next run in… the list can go on forever.

All in all, I just wanted to say that I’m sorry. Just remember that you’re not alone. It’s easy to see all these running success stories or even comeback stories continuously and get wrapped up in feeling like the world is against you. There are, however, many of us out there who don’t get to experience the joy of running again. I used to hate when people would tell me “you’re more than a runner.” Yes, it’s what we enjoy doing and it’s hard to see it now, but there are many just as rewarding things out there, too.

I agree with the others who has suggested meeting with surgeon specializing in hips, particularly if you can find someone who has trained under Dr. Philippon. Dr. Allston Stubbs in Winston Salem, NC is outstanding, depending on where you live.

My wife had FAI and a labral tear. She had surgery by a guy named Dr. Guillaume Dumont in Columbia, South Carolina. She's had virtually no pain since recovering from the surgery 3-4 years ago. She practices and teaches advance yoga daily.

Have you had them recheck your hips to see if the labral repairs failed and tore again?

I injured my foot as a senior in college. It never healed, though after a year or two I was able to get back to walking pretty normally.

I switched to other sports (racewalk, eventually--ouch) and coaching. Not being able to run still sucks large, but I've learned to deal. You will too.

BTW I've been an ex-runner for 50 years.
