I want to run the NYC marathon but I don't want to enter the lottery. I remember something about qualifying times in past years that allowed automatic acceptance into the race without the lottery hassle.
I've heard the marathon times needed were sub 2:45 or sub 2:50. Anyone know which one it is? Always heard that a sub 1:21 half marathon time will get you in as well.
I can't find any information on the NYC marathon web site. It's just a bunch of information about the 2005 race.
Guaranteed Entries
Those who were eligible for guaranteed entry were required to apply by midnight on May 1, 2005. Guaranteed entry applications are no longer being accepted, except through authorized tour operators.
The following six groups were eligible for guaranteed entry to the ING New York City Marathon 2005:
• Members of New York Road Runners since January 31, 2004, who completed at least nine NYRR-scored, qualifying races during the calendar year 2004.
• Entrants in the ING New York City Marathon 2004 who canceled prior to the race.
• Those who won or placed first in an age group in an NYRR-scored, qualifying race in 2004.
• Those who have completed 15 or more New York City Marathons.
• Those who have applied but been denied entry for the last three years in a row (2002, 2003, and 2004).
• Runners who meet the following qualifying time standards:
Open (Age 18-39)* Masters (Age 40+)*

Men 2:50:00 1:21:00 3:05:00 1:28:00

I found it a lot easier to qualify in the half.
Sub 1:35 for my ge group.
A short course helped too.
Do you know when the entry applications open for this year as likweise, i too can only find info on 2005?
Also, what is the entry costs ?

Keep checking www.ingnycmarathon.org. When the information is available, that site will reflect it.
Don't know how close you are to the times, but I'll note that the 2005 qualifying times were slower than those for 2004. For me, it became a 1:28 half from a 1:24. I assume they will not reverse course and lower the times.
