Sitcoms that were better than their predecessor

Pinky and the Brain.

Happy Days was a spinoff from Love American Style ("love and the happy days").

Newhart was a spinoff of The Bob Newhart Show.

Frasier is in my top 5 sitcoms for sure.

in other categories, SNL spawned a ton of movies that are far better than that show ever was.

“Good Times” was a spin-off of “Maude,” which was a spinoff of “All in the Family.” I consider it better than”Maude” but not as good as “All in the Family” (and by extension on another spinoff branch, “The Jeffersons,” which I agree can hold its own against “All in the Family.”). FWIW, I think “Good Times” at its best was on par with its best forebears, but its average quality across all episodes (in my highly fallible memory) was lower.

Doesn't count as a spin-off because Tracey Ullman wasn't a sitcom.

Can't think of a good spin-off at all, because sitcoms just aren't memorable. The ones mentioned so far are crap, especially Happy Days, origin of "jump the shark."

Actually Sanford and Son wasn't crap, but if it had any spinoffs they probably were. It was an adaptation of a British show but that's technically a rip-off, not a spin-off.

Really? Maude was a spin off of All in the Family as was The Jeffersons.

Frasier was a spin off of Cheers and arguably better (at worst it was on par).

Continuing from Andy Griffith, Gomer Pyle was a spin off and highly successful.

Frasier holds its own against Cheers.

How about Lou Grant, a spinoff of The Mary Tyler Moore Show? Not a sit com but a successful show.

Wasn't a spin-off, but the final episode certainly caught me and a lot of people off guard. I miss the days when cancelled shows ended with a bang. Newhart, St. Elsewhere, MASH, etc.

Why would I remember that formulaic stuff? It wasn't even meant to be remembered, just watched as people unwound after work, before the cop shows came on, then the news and then Carson or Letterman.

Only 3 networks and none realized how crappy they were overall until cable destroyed them.

I’m too much of a Cheers fan to think Fraser is better.

And to others, I don’t see why the shows have to be sitcoms to be spin-offs.

Better Call Saul is a spin-off from Breaking Bad.
