Really.
There are a ton of people on here saying that it's not the shoes. The shoes don't make a difference. Any of you shoe apologists want to explain why everyone wears them?
Because they do help. They turn a 17:30 into a 17:05. No big deal because that time is slow. But they also turn a 13:10 guy into a 12:55. That is a big deal because it changes the record books.

Absolutely zero evidence they make a 15 second difference at the elite level, are you out of your mind? Barega would have run 12:28 in 2018? Hassan Mead a closeted 12:47 guy? Nico Young didnt wear the superspikes when he ran 13:11, so ill just mark him down as a 12:56 guy.
Go look at the 100th fastest time in the world pre and post shoes, its moved like 4 seconds.

Stupid. Everyone runs in BU mega meets now. Take the 100th fastest time in the world year by year for outdoors for a better sample.

Stop looking at indoors my god. There are clearly far more factors influencing indoors times than just shoes. Outdoors is a far more representative sample

What does it matter? The tracks have been around for years. Not to mention there's plenty of outdoor times in my previous post. The only thing that has recently changed is shoes. Here's Men's World Outdoor 10000m:
Why don’t you look at 5Ks and the top 50 or top 25. When you go to top 100, you are delving into participation and opportunities for an infrequently run race. The spikes definitely work but 3 seconds a K is outrageous.
COVID, a respiratory virus which EVERYONE has been exposed to, caused respiratory adaptations that allows more oxygenated blood to get to the working muscles!
...or drugs...
...or pacing lights...
...or any number of things...
Did track spikes change that much? Nike added pebax (ZoomX) to the Dragonfly.....*shrug*.
...Lydiard was right and runners raced too often and needed a long base period (COVID).

I see nothing abnormal until 2022. We need more data post 2022 to see a trend.
