Seeing Woody Kincaid close a 12:51 indoor 5k in 26.x got me wondering how fast he and other men of his caliber can run a single 200m flat out. I would have to think Woody could run at least 23.x with a rolling start.
I know there are outliers as well, e.g., Salazar allegedly only being capable of a 56 second 400m (so maybe 26.x 200 speed?), but I would have to imagine the top 5k/10k guys of today are relatively prolific over 200m given how fast they can close out their longer races. I think it lends credibility to the idea that the fastest distance guys in the world are not just faster than us mortals because of a bigger/stronger engine, they’re also very fast over short distances and have a high degree of “speed reserve” At sub maximal speeds.
