He was on the road to be a decathlete pretty long, but the people he was working with tried to make him go over to hurdles. Amongst them was Andreas Thorkildsen (2x olympic gold, 1x wc gold, 3x wc silver javelin). I think some of the anchor points was that he was lagging behind on throwing.

Cheers for the response. Well that decision has definitely worked out well for him which is great but pretty impressive how much talent he had at such an early age!
