is parsons actually a trust fund kid or thats some type of ongoing joke? he does come off as just having money to throw around and not require any real responsibility - even without being on a contract with adidas - so i wouldnt be surprised. his instagram is very annoying personally, but i digress. life must be nice..
ive also wondered what pros are making. like, is an average contract something modest like 40-60k, or are some of these dudes making 100k+/yr pretty easily? obviously im sure brazier and hocker signed lucrative deals that must be over 100k/yr..but for the rest of the men, curious if most are making an average salary compared to a white collar worker, or if the pros on this list are all actually making more than most people for their running

You have it flipped. Kessler makes $600K and Hunter somewhere around $300K. Adidas overpays like crazy for HS phenoms. Even Fisher is not on that much of a base, but with bonuses for American records he definitely did quite well in 2022.

Most pro runners make far less than they would with a normal job. Fernando Cabada mentioned making less than 30k a year but that was a decade ago so more like 40k today, but still, not much.

Even some very good pros make under 100k. That's why prize money is a big deal to pros and why someone like Molly Huddle that's good on the roads used to do lots of random road races in her prime.

You're not going to be "well off" unless you're ultra elite like Galen Rupp on Sydney McLaughlin.

theres no way kessler makes 600k a year..maybe you mean over the life or a longer term of his contract? i heard rumours in the past that drew hunter was on 100k/yr for ten years + adidas paid for his school and other stuff. not sure if thats all correct but seems plausible

grant fisher is a top guy now. do you think his base is something like 40k only? id have to imagine nike is throwing him at least 75k salary just given how good he is as a runner. i agree and acknowledge that runners dont bring in money for these brands the same way a football or basketball star does of course lol. i wonder how much $ you get for breaking an american record

If you're a gymnast you get paid more than a runner. Running is easy - all you have to do is put on super shoes and run. Now, gymnastics .. that takes some serious talent.

No wonder even college gymnasts get paid $1 million a year.

I've seen some numbers for sprinters, especially some Justin Gatlin estimates, and would expect his reported income to be around average. He runs shorter distances and has some doping stains but still seems to be into the 8 figures for career earnings.

I was given information, by an agent, what someone I know gets paid. He's not a top runner. Very good- sib 4, 13:30 or so.

He gets:

40K plus expenses plus bonuses plus prize money.

Based on that, I'd say that most pros make more than the average let's runner think they make.

The problem is- if you make, say 60K a year plus, it could be for one year or many years.

If you started a job at 60K you could expect to be employed with raises for a career.

It's uncertain income.

There are a lot more runners making little money than there are gymnasts making any money at all.

I seem to recall Alan Webb was confirmed to have been placed on a $250K base back in the early 2000s. Given the effects of inflation etc and that at the time of signing Hobbs Kessler was/is seen as a similar talented running prodigy I would expect he's probably on around a $300-400K base. Just a guesstimate however.
