"Wetmore never murdered me, therefore he's not a murderer!"
So, what you are saying is that an individual accused of something is not entitled to have unsolicited character witnesses speak in their defense? That for some strange reason Wetmore instituted harsher weight requirements on his second-tier walk-on athletes than he did his top tier athletes who have won national titles, world championships, etc.? Are there any programs in the nation that don't offer body fat testing to their athletes? I ran for two D1 programs. Both did it. One did it sporadically, the other did it every other week. They also had heart rate monitors for workouts so you could track your exertion and an assortment of other tools at your disposal to help you become a better athlete. Never was anyone pressured by the coaches. Although, they might say something if someone was getting drunk all the time.

Holy sh!t! Wetmore's been accused of murder?!!!
No, they want him to be the fall guy because a bunch of women on a running team had eating disorders.
First and foremost i will acknowledge anyone with an eating disorder is a victim and going through a hell of a tough battle but to blame another person for it may be excessive, especially considering if it happens to an adult. I understand that women, especially young women are impressionable and often look towards a figure of authority for advice which oftentimes they'll blindly obey because their own perspectives are raw and they assume the advice giving figure is knowledgeable and trustworthy. Another reality is that women like to be told what to do, so if you have a authority figure of a man who's credentialed adequately in an area barking them advice, they're bound to automatically listen.
Now I don't know the exact extent of accusations here, so I wonder whether or not this man was directly implying them to lose weight or restrict food, in which case he should be held accountable and probably fired. But if he was not demanding weight loss, then he is just a victim as well and a victim of other adults not wanting to take accountability for their mistakes.
Sorry for the janky text. I couldn't figure out any other way to share.
Thanks for sharing. Some powerful names coming out in his support. I didn't run there, but I know a number of the people on that list and had some friends and family who worked or coached in the program. I have never heard anything bad about the man or the program, other than that he lives and breathes the sport and genuinely cares about his athletes.
I appreciate these athletes speaking up and voicing their experience which I think certainly counts in the perspective of considering the whole picture. I also think the court of public opinion is a crappy way to truly determine truth.
Something must have happened with the investigation in the last few days as that article came out weeks ago. Friday 5 PM press release incoming?
They've probably had it ready to go since Monday morning. They need those clicks though. They'll probably be able to put a reporters/sell outs name on this one, unlike the Andrew Tate stories they run. You know when they list the journalist/writer as the newspaper or TV corporation name, then the story deserves no credibility.
Metivier's post informs us about the character of Mark Wetmore and, in combination with us, tells us of the kinds of actions he did take over many years, which is relevant to examining this particular set of accusations because we see that he made it his practice to deal in a healthy fashion with his athletes. It is not irrelevant.
Wetmore had every reason to be highly intentional with Metivier, she was runner-up at NCAA's under "truly abusive" coaching before transferring to CU. She doesn't acknowledge that she enjoyed a unique status, maybe out of myopia. Multiple sources are saying Wetmore was far less intentional with runners he apparently didn't perceive as being talented enough to serve his aims. There have been clear red flags about CU's women's locker room (and maybe men's, too) being a den of eating disorders. Their top women (Sara Gorton, Molly Austin, etc.) more often than not were clearly carrying an unhealthy low body fat % in races. There was scuttlebutt that they sat athletes out from workouts and racing if they fell below a body fat %, but again we know that just the act of a coach measuring the body fat % is a slippery slope. Plus taking the measurement isn't prescriptive in any case. They needed to let professionals in those fields handle acute medical, nutritional, and psychological issues.
This is awful. The running world closing ranks to protect one of its own. It's really disappointing from Kara Goucher as she has experienced what it's like to be on the other side of something like this with the whole Nike/Salazar stuff. She knows what it's like when high profile people close ranks to protect a high status individual.
I don't know if Wetmore is guilty of the things his accusers say, but there is a proper way for these things to play out with a credible investigation.
Rounding up a bunch of high profile individuals in the sport to offer a character defense of a coach accused of misconduct can only prejudice that investigation, and that is clearly the intent. If it was just about offering Wetmore personal support, they could have done that privately or as individuals. You only organize a letter like this as a show of force. It's hard to see it as anything other than an attempt to bully the accusers.
Shame on everyone who participated in this. Even if none of these people experienced anything untoward from Wetmore, they are denying the experiences of other (female) athletes. Again, Goucher knows what it's like to be disbelieved because everyone wants to support the superstar coach, I can't believe she's contributed to putting other women in the same position.
My understanding is that they had a subject expert like a nutritionist or what not to do the body fat measures, not Wetmore himself, and the former is the point person on this.
this is a well known story. The runner in question was a lower tier runner who was miffed because she wasn't getting wetmore's attention.
Assuming that Kara et el don't know anything about the CU program and they are blindly supporting is typical LR arrogance. Yeah dude, you know more than the people who are there.

Well stated. Funny thing, I tended to have pretty neutral to positive impressions of both Kara and Wetmore. I also tended to think Kara got targeted uniquely and unfairly by men on this board over minor things. Now she's on the side of what those same men on this board prefer for once. It's good to see that this time social media wasn't the safe space echo chamber she was seeking. I'll still await the investigation's outcome to see if the charges hold water. I think Wetmore has always had good intentions, but like any of us has blind spots. You ask a decade's worth of Indiana basketball players and to a man, especially the star players, they'll agree that Bobby Knight is the greatest thing that happened to them. Though with a few dissenters. Not to compare Knight directly with Wetmore, just shedding a perspective that the social media campaign is certainly predictable if not at all revelatory. I'm uncertain that someone would bother bringing this to light if they didn't feel it was significantly problematic. Fair minds will let the accuser(s) have her proverbial day in court, not resorting to making gross assumptions about ability or mental stability. It stinks that Goucher, Coburn, Metivier, among others want to sway public opinion without an announced finding, to punch down at the accuser(s). Could it be that someone inside, like Burroughs, leaked it to them and they're hoping to fire up the alumni network to soften if not block the blow? Does this suggest it's possible we find out something that would be serious enough for the AD to fire Wetmore and Burroughs with cause? Did Billy Nelson see the writing on the wall when he reached for the exit door late last year?
