Hypotheses:
1) Evil: could just be some bad apples that are always present in any group of people, and this group just happens to be armed and armed with the legal power to be violent.
2) Racism: popular hypothesis, but I find it difficult to believe that cops are any more prejudiced than the average person (that doesn’t have murderous instincts), and in any case, it doesn’t explain why unarmed people of all races are murdered by cops.
3) Fear: cops truly fear for their safety and lash out, but this is a laughable hypothesis given the bodycam footage that we’ve been seeing.
4) Groupthink: Something in the training, or peer pressure, or aggression being valued within the police community?
Something else? If it’s #1, it’s fundamentally a very difficult problem to solve. To the extent there’s any element of #2, that to me just says that until some minority communities remain economically disempowered, some prejudice is inevitable, but socioeconomic equity isn’t something we are going to be achieving any time soon.
So what’s the problem and what’s the fix? Why is the threat of camera footage not deterring them enough?
