I complained about this at the high school level. My kid wasn’t in the race but it was during Covid and supposedly was being live-streamed to keep crowds down. It was a longer race. Maybe the 5000m and this athlete ran away with the race. The videographers replied that who wouldn’t want to watch her. She was great watch (I’ve seen her brother’s name mentioned on this site) but we missed the race developing behind her. It was probably entertaining. I also felt bad for those families who stayed home and didn’t even see their kid.

Honestly it's better than their usual tactic of waiting until one of the leaders makes a big move and at that exact moment they switch to the chase pack.

I agree with this. There's a video of the 1972 Olympics 5000 where the British announcer names each runner as they cross the line and the camera shows them.

I don't want to see the winner jogging, etc, I want to see the race.

And during the race, choose a camera angle that mimics, as much as possible, being there. You can't get a sense of the race focusing on one runner and the secondary places and times DO matter.
