Interestingly, Kessler at 18 in 2021, when he ran the high school record of 3:34, was faster than Yared Nuguse, when he ran the then in-season collegiate record of 3:34.68. Now, Kessler has run 7:39, close to the old collegiate record, while Nuguse has run 7:28.24, almost 11 seconds faster at 3k. Kessler is doing fantastic at his age, still 19 until March, but Nuguse has gone far ahead, at least at this distance. I attribute that difference to the far greater quality of Ritz's training group and his pushing that group a lot harder in workouts, which so far has produced tremendous results.

With all due respect and you kind of tough on the youth of Kessler, but then emphasize the gap..Yuguse will be 24 in May..24....Kessler will be 20 in March. Yuguse ran 7:38 the then CR at age 22 and 8 months? I would think Kessler blows by that within 2 years? Kessler is 19 and has run 3:34.x 1:46.x 2:16.x and 7:39. He may never get to 7:28, that is friggin fast. but I like what we are seeing lately. Yuguse, looked marvelous in his run...Kincaid an amazing mark..he is sort of an odd talent to me. LOL..up and down.

"You kind of touch on" ..sorry..and your post was balanced..I was just providing some "Homer" context
king, you are right to emphasize the age gap. Obviously, Kessler is running fantastic times for his age. To put it in context for age and class, he ran 7:39 at 19, when he would be (is?) a sophomore, in January, nearly 9 seconds faster than German Fernandez and Jim Ryun ran at 18-19. So, Kessler is not the US junior record holder in the 3000m and doesn't make the list, but had he run this race just three weeks ago, at the end of December, he would have become the US junior record holder in the 3k by nearly 9 seconds!! So, don't take my post as criticism at all. And Kessler was set back last year in the 1500m by an injury. What I wanted to emphasize is that Ritz is throwing a lot at his early to mid-20s athletes in their prime of their careers so that they can win now, whereas Warhurst is bringing his teenager along slowly and gradually for the long haul.

I wouldn’t say that Kessler was better in 2021. Hobbs’ 3:34 was being pulled along perfectly in a pro race trying to chase down Engels running a US season leading time. Yared’s 3:34 was 100% alone in a college conference prelim. And then Yared made the Olympic team and Hobbs didn’t. Obviously, both very talented and should make more teams, but I don’t agree that Hobbs was better in 2021.

It’s Nuguse, man. Are you ready to recant that he’s not due for a 3:31-3:32 like you said a few months ago?

They are apples and oranges to me. Nuguse we’ve kinda known had the edge in terms of aerobic strength from winning an ACC XC title a few years ago. Hobbs as a not crazily trained high schooler (like NP guys) should continue to narrow the gap. With both focusing on the 1500, let’s recall that Wightman “only” ran 7:36 last year. Yet he was strong enough to outkick Jakob. Hobbs is building the requisite strength for the 1500. Wightman has 1:43 speed, which is why it was great to hear Hobbs say sub-1:45 is the goal outdoors. I’m very high on Nuguse but he might max out as a 1:45.x guy - he is on the strength side of 1500 runners. Maybe he could dip into the 1:44s, but I’m not sure.

Obvious typo..sorry..did I say that? I said based off info on hand..AT the time..if I did say that, there was no indicator for that OR this..and there was not. I thought he would go under 7:35 after watching workout..this was extraordinary.
If I said that? I stand by it until otherwise wrong..then I will retract it. And admit wrongness, as I always do.LOL!!

Yes, you said it. Weird how many of us did see this breakthrough in times coming despite there being “no indicator” for him to do so.
https://slv.laportal.net/Competitions/RegisterList/413256/7954Excited to see Hocker in a race that will truly test where his fitness is at. Nuguse strung together some good W’s after USA’s and looks ready to run...
Going to be a factor in the 1500. American Record…who in the 1500 field can go faster at 3K? Jakob, Olli?
+1
My first thought when I saw Nuguse´s time was that he will be a medal contender in the 1500m in Budapest. Provided he can bring his current shape into the outdoor high season.
And to your question: Jakob, Katir and McSweyn. Olli hasn´t run an official 3000m for years according to IAAF but I agree that he possibly can run close to Nuguses time.
