Not only irresponsible, but also pathetic - showing zero impulse control and power of will. There is nothing important on your phone - ever, get a grip.
Also folks: please DO NOT check your phone for texts, emails, etc at a traffic light!!! You are bound to get flustered and go when the light is still red or keep stopped when the light turns green. I learned this lesson the hard way... thankfully no one got hurt. Just turn the damn thing off when you are driving if that is what it takes.
If so, do you realize that you're being an irresponsible idiot, or do you try to justify it to yourself?
I thought you only needed to look at the road for one decisecond every second and can look at your phone 90% off the time. Even my non-smart car appears to be self driving as in I just sit with my hands on the steering and it more or less goes in a straight line by itself.

As an icu nurse in a major level 1 trauma center, we thank you for your business; but would prefer to be bored. Sadly, the hardest part is surviving after you have killed an innocent person. I have seen it more times than any person ever should. Unfortunately, self entitlement/disregard for others safety will continue to be job security.
How is glancing down to look at the map app on my phone any more dangerous than glancing down at the speedometer or adjusting the AC?
If you use your phone for navigation, it's time to get a mount so you're not looking down.
This advice circa 2010
I have one. It makes it even easier to look at my phone, which is the very thing the OP doesn't want me to do.
OP's complaint is not being distracted by a phone or looking away from the road at a phone. It is literally just "looking at your phone," which you still do even if it is in a mount. Hell, per the OP's post, even catching sight of the blank screen of your phone while it sits in your mount in sleep mode makes you an irresponsible idiot.
Stupid advice .How long do you think it will take before some kind person smashes your window to grab that phone sitting in plain view on the mount.
Anyone stupid or careless enough to leave their phone in plain site deserts have it stolen. Who leaves their phone in their car when they leave? Not many people.
My state just enacted a law at the beginning of the year. Having a phone in your hand is when driving is now a primary offense. In the past there would have had to be another offense and if you were using a cell phone you could be ticket for that as well. I believe that holding it while using it to talk is OK. The fines are pretty significant and points are assessed against the driver’s license. It’s a long overdue law.
The uncle of my daughter’s friend was killed by someone using a cell phone while driving. She got an awareness campaign going at the high school that has been effective.
I know someone that was cycling and was hit by a person using their phone. He ended up with fractured vertebrae, a bad pneumothorax in one lung and a hemothorax in the other. He was in the trauma ICU for 2 1/2 weeks, intubated for a lot of that time and developed ARDs. He’s had mono of PT & OT.
A friend of mine is a state highway patrol officer. He said that drivers using their phone and looking at it look about the same from behind and have behaviors on the road that are about the same as drunk drivers and those using drugs. It is fairly obvious.
