These arguments will never end because leftists can't live without them. You can't give something away for free to someone who hasn't earned it. It's never had a benefit in world history and a lump sum payment to people who may have had a few distant relatives enslaved nearly 200 years ago won't fix anything. 99% of the same people who are broke and a drain on society now will still be that way within 10 years even after a $5 million payment.

I read the article. I predict right now this will not pass. The people of SF will recall the Board of Supervisors.

SF has about 45,000 Blacks. Not everyone will qualify but if all do that would be $225B. Let's say a quarter do (over 18, lived there 10 years, etc.) that would still be $56B. The plan calls for a one time lump sum payment. The entire SF city budget is $14B. So where is the money coming from?

Also, does the state then tax it as income?

Also, if there is debt forgiveness does that mean that mortgages are covered. If so, who makes it right for the banks who hold those notes? What additional cost is there for that? Oh and if a debt is forgiven that counts as income. The state could issue an exemption, but the federal government would likely not do that.

Not that it'll ever happen but $5mil one time payment would be less than $2.5 mil check. 12.5% to the state, 37% to the Feds and 1.5% to the city of SF.

There are about 4.7 million people in San Francisco, 5.5% of whom are black (about 258,500 people). To pay out $5 million to each black resident would cost about $1.3 trillion (A cost of $275,000 per resident, or about 3x the average San Franciscan's annual revenue of $96,677). I'm sure San Franciscans would happily give up three year's salary in the interest of equity.

The annual general fund revenue for the City of San Francisco is $6.1 billion. In order to cover just the reparations (let alone their existing annual obligations of $6.1 billion), they would have to increase revenue by over 211 times their current amount. Just curious where you think San Francisco would get the money to cover this utopian project. Sales tax? Even if you increased it to 100%, it would take 675 years to pay off these reparations (and that's assuming they can get back to their pre-pandemic levels.).
