So after a 1.5 year hiatus from actual running, I have set a goal to race a half-marathon in June. Call it a New Years resolution... but frankly, it's about time I got my butt off the couch.
Anyway, I have trained and raced most distances from the mile to the marathon. Most of my training has fallen within the realm of the 5k to marathon. However, I have never trained specifically for a half-marathon. I have raced this distance twice, once after a training for a 5-10k on the track and once before the marathon I ran. I raced much faster (1:10) on a hillier (is that a word?) course during my 5-10K training period then during the marathon training period (1:15). I should state however that the second race came within the middle of a training cycle while the first race came at the end of a competative season.
So fianlly my questions are... how should I tailor my training approach for the half? How far should I stretch my long run? What should tempo run paaces look like? Should I incorporate some mile repeat sesions on the track and if so, at what pace? etc.
During my marathon training, I loosely followed Pete Pfintzger (sp?) 'Advanced Marathon' guide. However, this training approach is (obviuosly) geared toward the marathon with long runs reaching up past 20mi.
Any help, insight, words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
