Both could be great. If it's an open 400, probably Sydney. If it's a relay race...that'd be really close. It's hard to say, since Sydney and Athing rarely compete to begin with. The relay races we see them run, they have no competition.
If both take the event seriously, we are in store for some great races
And, as mentioned on another website, Paris 2024 could see a US Women's 4x4 relay made up of NO US Women's 400m finishers: Abby S. (200m); Dalilah M. (400mH); Sydney M. (400hH); and Athing M. (800m).
Can see both of them under 47sec with the Kersee magic. Would give the nod to Sydney to be the faster of the two. Maybe Bobby K can get Mu to finish a mile.

big fan of kersee and his syringe of designer drugs too but a woman running under 47 is fantasy. it will never happen, no matter how many drugs they are given.

Athing easily ran 25 races or more in her Olympic year. Probably raced more than any other elite woman in the world so I what do mean by rarely compete?

IAAF has on the starting like 37 times in 2021.
Some of those were prelims / semis, but for sure, she was the track 37 times for 20-25 unique races.

Mu was also constrained by her collegiate schedule in her Olympic year. All collegians compete too much. Look at how her numbers dropped when she went pro. Abby Steiner competed around 60 times last year. That’s crazy. It’s also why people are very interested to see what she does this season on a professional schedule.
Mu is going to remain the best US hope in the 800 during the foreseeable future. She will be a solid 4x4 option and always a solid 400 player. IMHO, though, the 800 will remain her best event and I look for her to improve there.
I also believe that Steiner has a higher ceiling in the 400 than Mu does. She may not show it this season but sometime over the next few years we’ll get a hint of her 400 potential.
To the guy that thinks McLaughlin & Mu are going under 47: put down the crack pipe. That isn’t happening.
