How much is necessary? i was thinking 2 mi but is that to much for a guy on low mileage?

I'd do a short jog of 10-15 mins, some dynamic stretches and then a few strides, maybe four, with walking recovery inbetween. Most people tend to overdo their warm-up IMO. It's not like you're sprinting where you need a longer warm-up. It's a 3000m. Better to underdo it than overdo it.
Whenever I race on track I usually start my warm up around 40 minutes before the race. I jog 15 minutes and then do a lot of mobility. 10 minutes before the race start I put on the spike shoes and do 3-4 strides on the track if posible. It works for me, but every athlete is different
I think 2 miles is a reasonable warmup for 3k. I wouldn't do anything less than 10 minutes. Definitely need some drills/dynamics and strides in there. But lots of different routines work for different people. Don't be afraid to experiment to figure out what works for you in different scenarios.
Maybe obvious: shorter races and colder weather require longer warmups.
General observations: Young runners don't do enough warmup and don't include enough intensity in their warmups. You might do a few bouts of tempo pickups - something like 2-4x 60s on/off. Maybe even some short pickups at race pace.
Ideally you want your heart rate slightly elevated when the gun goes off. Think about a workout. Does the first rep feel the best? Or do the 2nd, 3rd ones feel better because you're now dialed-in to the pace, effort, etc.

There is only a need of 8-10 min jog to 'warm up' the muscels. And the warm up won't go faster with faster pace, so keep it an easy jog. Then you add some stretching/ gymnastics and finish with 3-4 faster strides 60-80 m .....then you are full of energy to go!🧙♂️🇸🇪
2.5. 3 minutes jogging, dynamic stretches, 9 minutes easy, 4.5 slightly uptempo (progressing from 'steady' to 'sub threshold'), and 2x30" at 5k effort with 30s jog rest
Start 45 minutes before
There's many many good warm ups I would do a little bit of jogging a little bit of stretching and then a series of progressive 80 to 100 m strides starting at 8 minute pace 7 minute pace 6 minute pace now you're down to 5 minute pace so you're running something like 18-19 seconds put on spikes do a couple more maybe one at 17 16 15 something like that

Do what you normally do to warm up for any other race or hard workout.
