Background- Hoping for some help from the board readers with a chronic calf issue, which is
going on 2.5 years. At the start of covid I began running less and migrated back to playing basketball, which in turn led me to desiring to increase my vertical leap. After ~4-5 weeks of a vertical leap program I felt a sharp pain in one of my calves during one of my jumping workouts. I rested for a week and resumed my regimen (stupid decision). That pain in the end was not limited to one leg, at various points thereafter, in either the left or right calf I felt a stabbing, debilitating pain deep in the muscle. I should have taken a long period off and rested it, but I at various points took 1-4 weeks off only to resume light running and basketball/this plyometric routine. I have not seen any visible signs of swelling or bruising nor any acute popping or tearing sounds, but the muscle feels tender with a little pressure. Not tender enough that I can’t foam roll, but if I put one leg on top (added pressure), the foam rolling can become almost unbearably painful. Most recent instance of re-injury was on a treadmill ~2 weeks ago. I felt the left calf beginning to seize up – generally if I stop in time, it’s not a complete disaster, but if I continue running the pain is VERY deep within the calf and I end up limping off the machine or home from the run.
PT - This injury has reoccurred every month or so for 2.5 years, despite a 2 rounds of physical therapy. Physical therapy consisted of a regimen of both stretching and strengthening of
both legs, including ankle mobility. I now have an audible cracking sound (not painful) from both my ankles when rotating my foot slightly. Both PTs suggested a minor calf tear in each leg; one was more specific with presuming minor soleus tears.
I plan on getting an MRI in a few weeks, but regardless wanted to pose this to the message boards (I’ve been through a lot of the old calf literature on here). Posting on here before was quite illuminating for a hamstring injury a few years ago.
Happy 2023 to all.
