Where are some of the most under-rated running towns in the United States? I’m going to get this started out by saying the San Luis Obispo, Ca. is up there. Cal Poly has a great running tradition for both the men and women (more so for the men). There is surprisingly large group of post-colligate runners, close proximity to three beaches and most importantly the Montana De Oro state park. MDO has over 80 miles of trails; most have a view of the beach.

Wouldn't have said it 3-4 years ago, but I think St. Louis is now. We're just lacking a signature race to put us more on the map.
After running in a couple of places in Ohio, I know greatly appreciate Northeast, Ohio, between Akron and Cleveland. There are many parks that have loops and trails that can entertain one for years, and a towpath and a bike path. Winter training is hard because the snow eliminates most trails, but I still think its a great place to run especially compared to western Ohio, which is flat with no trails, just mile blocks.

Why wouldn't you have said it a couple years ago? The only thing they've done since then is pave or pack gravel over trails that were already there (for the most part). Still a great area for running, hopefully state, county, etc. will stop paving everything.

The people aren't necessarily elite, but fully love and appreciate training and even racing, which is like going back to your roots. I'm in Chicago now, and we'd beat the pants off of them down there, but still Memphis is my favorite.

I gotta agree with Bar Harbor/Mt. Desert Island... I spent some time there last summer... There's a network of Carriage roads that go for miles and are closed to cars... Fabulous running....
