For context: I coach at a high school in California, but I'm not a head coach. Several distance runners have brought it to my attention that they have been on the receiving-end of jokes from sprinters on the team, on account of being smaller, weaker, less muscular, and being the weak links of our track team. Our head coach insists that all athletes on the team watch all the events, but our sprinters aren't interesting in watching any event longer than the 800m. The sprinters argue that our stadium is always packed for the sprinting events (not as packed as for, say, football, but still) but that the stadium seems to clear once the distance runners start running, so what's the point?
Additionally, our school funds the track team through revenue the football team generates, and at least half the sprinters are from the football team, furthering this sense of entitlement. My head coach, worried about a dwindling number of athletes joining the track program, is reluctant to do anything about the issue.
What should I do in this situation?
