"The lack of local interest was baffling considering the U.S. topped the medals table with 13 golds, and a championship-record 33 overall, as their men's track team recovered from a disappointing Tokyo Games to sweep the 100 and 200 metres podiums."
I have so many questions/thoughts about this article .
1) Why was it published on December 15. Shouldn't it have been published the week of or after Worlds?
2) When the author writes "lack of local" interest does she mean Eugene or USA?
3) Have she ever gone to Eugene and had to pay her own way? There are next to zero hotels and rental cars (I talked to an NCAA coach this year that had to rent an RV to get around town just for NCAAs).
4) The tickets were expensive and when they first went on sale we were in the thick of Covid. Are you really going to plan an expensive trip to an impossible to get to place not knowing if it's going to even happen?
5) When people bought tickets, they had no idea how well the US was going to perform. Additionally, many locals were interested but can't afford it nor have the time to go to Worlds, NCAAs and USAs, all of which were Eugene.
At the time, the smaller than expected crowds were a bit baffling. Now, not so much. Every die hard track fan in American has gone to Eugene - many times. Too many times. Why waste a week of vacation and a ton of cash to go to place you've already been. It would probably be as easy and maybe cheaper to take my family to Budapest next year for Worlds than Eugene this year.
